: Never had a run-in with a skunk, but I would think the ignore thing is the way to go. Raccoons hate loud noises and will scatter if you bang something. My nice suburban neighborhood is completely overrun with them. You haven't lived until you end up stark naked, chasing one around the house that came in the cat door at 3AM. You quickly lose track of just who is chasing whom.

: Came THIS close to getting bit by a rattle snake earlier this year near Desert Center, CA. Man, was HE pissed at me! I keep a bite kit in the car now. Way worse than a skunk.

RE: Snakes - have you thought about using protective leggings in snake infested areas and season? These protective equipment can be obtained cheaply from outdoor safety equipment providers, such as www.benmeadows.com (search on 'snake leggings'). I use a pair of the canvas leggings while blundering around the desert at 2 AM!

: Interacting with nature is one of my favorite things about night shooting.
