This is probably the most practical question I've ever seen posted here!
I don't know what's officially the best method, but I've always found that shining a mag light directly towards any nocturnal animal generally makes them move on; I've used this technique on
skunks many times, and have yet to get spritzed.
More of a problem than skunks, in my view, are raccoons, which tend not to spook so easily.
