Curriculum
This advanced course in Digital Night Photography (NPy) is held
on Saturday September 26, 2009 at the historic Fort
Mason Center, a cultural nexus of the San Francisco Bay Area.
This Workshop includes:
- Brief presentation on the History / Development of Digital Photography,
with an emphasis on the parallel technological breakthroughs that
over the years advanced the possibility of Night Photography with
digital media.
- Discussion and demonstration of the different types of noise that one
encounters in long exposures with Digital Cameras - random, fixed, and
sensor noise - and how best to minimize their effect..
- An overview of recently published "night
work," by photographers working within the digital realm.
- In addition to these areas of general interest,
there is a lengthy discussion of technical considerations.
Several hours will be spent shooting the architecture,
rolling hills, and waterfront areas around Fort Mason. Emphasis
will be on evaluating existing lighting situations and exposing accordingly.
Supplemental lighting possibilities will be discussed and demonstrated.
NPy using film, as well as digital, will be discussed and compared. This
is an intensive workshop limited to 12 participants who will be closely
supervised on location.
Students will provide their
own equipment and are expected to be familiar with basic photographic
techniques, digital workflow, and at least one Photographic Post-Processing
software program (PhotoShop, Lightroom, etc.). Students are encouraged
to bring their own laptop computers, as well. A recommended equipment
list will be provided upon receipt of registration. Accommodation assistance
and tourist information is available.
