Our 22nd Online Exhibition of Night Photography!

Auto-Nocturne

"I wish I was the full moon
shining off a Camaro's hood." (Pearl Jam)

The Nocturnes.com invites all interested artists to enter our 22nd online Night Photography Exhibition, Auto-Nocturne. This competition is open to all Night Photographers (NPrs), all photo media - and film cameras are OK, too! We ask only that your final outcome would normally be a fine photographic print - b/w, color, alternative, fuzzy focus, whatever - presenting mysterious, riveting nocturnal imagery.

"Stalled out" on the idea of what constitutes a "auto-nocturne?" Need a "jump-start" to get the ball rolling? Well, there's the obvious connection to be made: vibrant colorful Night Photography of the late-20th century vehicular transport (CARS!) variety.

Your first stop for inspiration should definitely be the Flckr group of work done by participants in Jurors Troy Paiva and Joe Reifer's Pearsonville NPy Workshops - http://www.flickr.com/groups/pearsonvilleworkshop/ - with "unscheduled stops" at Joe's - www.joerefer.com - and Troy's - www.lostamerica.com Web sites.

So what is your interpretation of an Auto-Nocturne - would it take the form of a ferocious vintage 60s Chrysler Newport - as pictured above in Troy’s image? Or a sly wink from a '59 Impala (above)? Maybe yours would be an entirely different “variation on a theme” (wouldn’t be a Nocturne without the musical reference!) - you might present a nocturnal image having no vehicular reference point at all, instead recalling the tenets of Automatism as practiced by the Surrealists, or other ‘automatic’ art practices such as the “cut ups” of William S. Burroughs, or everyday “readymades.” A night photograph often times will present itself as a ‘gimme’ (a kind of automatism) - so, why not give it a try - submit work now!

And, some musical connections:
"Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen
“Ol’ 55" by Tom Waits
Any car song by the Beach Boys
“Paradise by the dashboard light” by Meatloaf
"Dead Man's Curve" by Jan and Dean
"Little ‘66" by Steve Earle
"Racing in the Streets" by Bruce Springsteen
"Little GTO" by Ronnie & the Daytonas
"Radar Love" by Golden Earring
- feel free to Google away!

More inspiration - a great video featuring a '55 Chevy along with Robert Plant ("Big Log") which can be seen here - a song to a desert muse and the open road ("Driving me on / Driving me down the road . . . "). Witness also, another kind of Auto-Nocturne (maybe an Auto-Noir?) evident in this video of Twentynine Palms by Mr. Plant:
"Twentynine Palms,
I feel the heat of your desert heart..
Taking me back down the road
that leads back to you"

With all this in mind, let's see what we can come up with for Auto-Nocturne, shall we? Again, much like our California Nocturne and New York Nocturne shows, maybe your images don't need to be so-o-o literal - perhaps it can refer subliminally to the idea of Auto-Nocturne - something to think about, no?

"See the U.S.A., in your Chevrolet . . ." (delightful jingle performed by Dinah Shore)

Entry Fee and Deadline
There is no limit to the number of pieces submitted per artist. Entry Fee: $25 for up to 3 entries; each additional entry is $5. Postmarked dates for entries are NOT acceptable for this competition - we will need to RECEIVE your 'hard copy' of entry form and fee by September 21, 2010! Please NOTE: Entries from outside the U.S. should be sent well in advance of the September 21 deadline, as international mail deliveries are often delayed up to a week or two.

Exhibition Dates:
Exhibition runs from September 30 through November 10, 2010. Accepted work will then reside in an ever-growing archive of nocturnal imagery on The Nocturnes Web site after the exhibition closes - available to NPrs and those interested in Night Photography (NPy), worldwide.

What to send:
Send jpeg files at 72 dpi named appropriately for the Web: 8 letters-dot-3 letter extension (e.g.- niteshot.jpg) all lowercase letters. The size should be no greater than 800 pixels in any one dimension. Square medium format film images are optimal at 800x800 pixels; and scanned 35mm film images should be approximately 800 pixels on the longest side.

If you send images via snail mail, use lots of protective cardboard for shipping disk - we accept CDs of your images ONLY via USPS. An even better alternative is to send us the URL of images that are already on a web page (a Flickr account, while not ideal, would work also), and we can 'retrieve' those images; then you can easily FAX (or snail-mail) in your entryform with payment information. As you might have gathered, we are trying to avoid a flood of emails and haphazard, ineffective attachments being sent to the site.

Awards:
Two (2) Awards will be awarded at the discretion of the Awards Jurors, Troy Paiva and Joe Reifer- a Best of Show and an Honorable Mention; and the amount of prize money awarded is dependent on the number of entries received and selected for exhibition. The final jurying will be done from a preliminary selection of works by members of The Nocturnes.

Sales:
Sales will be encouraged - No Commission taken for any of our online exhibits - and direct links to artist sites or emails will be provided. Artwork remains Copyright of the participating artists. Pages on the Web site are Copyright, The Nocturnes, and Pacific Media Arts. The exhibit, Auto-Nocturne is Copyright Pacific Media Arts and The Nocturnes Web site.
