We are happy to have Chris Faust serve as Juror for The Panocturnists
exhibit! His commentary follows:
"As a juror this was a difficult group of images to choose from.
I've juried on four occasions for various nonprofit galleries, the Ohio
Arts Council, And the Minnesota State Fair twice (an average of 800 entries
each). This proved to be hard because of the diversity and in some cases
the great deal of effort that went into the work.
"As with all jury work, it is subjective. I should probably reveal
some of my sensibilities because it may or may not be obvious though the
work on my website. I'm not particularly an "ain't nature grand" kind
of guy and that kind of work needs to really hold my attention. I prefer
more "cultural landscapes" when I go out and make photographs. I'm not
limited to rotational images*, but my definition of a panorama is one
that gives the feel of the expansive. I have a questioning view of the
constructive photograph, the over photoshoped image. I think in the present
day, with the use of Photoshop, there is a new trend of "photo illustration"
- and we have to recognize a new category in this field and judge this
work separately. I'm a film guy and so as a result, my feelings lie there."
*(by rotational I mean cirkut , or widelux
type images)

"This feels to me like a photograph I would have made.
It has no real "Photoshop" feel to it. It's fairly formal and monumental
and an image that I could appreciate for a long time. It would be nice
to see a whole study of maybe 20-30 images."

"It could have a more expansive feel to it, but I really
like the mystery. Again, I would feel very comfortable looking at this
image for long time. Each time I look at it, I get something new from
it."
Juror Biograph
"My photographs represent a collection of landscapes made over the
last eleven years. Part of this work has always dealt with a fascination
I have for what has been called cultural landscape. The way that people
use private and public landscapes reflects differences in local cultures
and marks history.
"Landscapes are constantly changing which has given an urgency to
my need to document this change and record the decisive moment. Common
subjects that anyone can see on any given day revealed in an uncommon
way will remain my particular aspiration."
